Providing 2D Barcodes Worldwide

For over 15 years, our International Barcodes Network (IBN) has been providing linear retail barcodes (EAN and UPC codes) to customers worldwide. In 2023, we launched a new service called IBN Link, designed to keep our clients and other businesses at the forefront of the evolving barcode industry with the introduction of 2D Barcodes.

2D Barcodes: The Future of Retail

2D Barcodes represent the next generation of retail barcodes. By 2027, it is anticipated that all retail shops in the USA – and eventually worldwide – will be capable of scanning 2D Barcodes at the point of sale. Initially, Digital Link QR Codes will be incorporated alongside traditional EAN or UPC barcodes on product packaging. However, as all retail systems are upgraded to read 2D Barcodes, the older formats will be phased out.

Many businesses, both small and large, are already integrating 2D Barcodes into their products to connect with consumers via a rich digital platform of product and brand information. Now is the time to start planning how to incorporate this new barcode technology into your product labels.

What Are 2D Barcodes?

2D Barcodes combine the Digital Link framework with QR code technology, allowing a Digital Link URL to be encoded into a QR code. This enables users to scan the QR code with a smartphone or QR code scanner, directing them to a web page containing detailed product information and other relevant data.

How It Works:

1. Generate a Digital Link:
A Digital Link is created using a standardized format defined by GS1. This link encapsulates various pieces of information about a product, such as Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs), batch/lot numbers, production dates, and more. It can also include attributes related to sustainability, authenticity, and other relevant details.

2. Encode into QR Code:
The Digital Link is then encoded into a QR code, which is a 2D matrix barcode that can store a substantial amount of information in a small space. The encoded QR code can be printed on product packaging, labels, or displayed digitally.

3. Scanning the QR Code:
Consumers or business users can scan the QR code using a smartphone’s camera or a dedicated QR code scanning app. Once scanned, the QR code reader decodes the QR code and extracts the Digital Link URL embedded within it.

4. Accessing Product Information:
After extracting the Digital Link URL, the scanning app directs the user to a web page associated with that link. This web page is dynamically generated and contains comprehensive information about the product, such as product origin, ingredients, manufacturing process, sustainability practices, and more.

The combination of Digital Link and QR codes brings efficiency and transparency to the process of accessing product information. It eliminates the need for manually entering or searching for product details, making it easier for consumers and businesses to obtain accurate and up-to-date information. This technology has a wide range of applications, including supply chain management, retail, food safety, and consumer engagement.

One Code, Endless Opportunities

2D barcodes go beyond traditional capabilities by using a digital link embedded within a compact QR code, significantly reducing printing costs while enhancing customer interaction through detailed product insights. These advanced barcodes serve as portals to multimedia content, connecting customers with videos, websites, and enriched product details. Scanning a 2D barcode with a smartphone provides instant access to a wealth of information, including allergens, nutritional facts, recycling protocols, and sustainability efforts—all through the innovative 2D digital link.

The versatility of 2D barcodes is a game-changer for retail environments. They streamline processes from point-of-sale transactions to inventory management and simplify complex tasks such as product recalls and supply chain logistics. This technology enables consumers to gain deep insights into products and brands, paving the way for more streamlined, information-rich packaging. Say goodbye to cluttered packaging!
